Writing Guide

This page contains guidance on different features of writing that we are working on in class.

1) Informal email

Informal emails are sent to people we know well and usually have a close relationship with.

Example:

Situation: A friend in another country has asked you to write about how you spend your summer holidays in Greece.

Response:

Hi Thomas,  (greeting)

It was great to hear from you. You asked me to tell you about my summer holidays. Summer holidays in Greece are wonderful!          (short opening: Say something personal; Refer to topic in a general way)

Well, our summers are quite long. (topic sentence: our + summers) We break up from school in the middle of June and we go back on the 11th of September. Greece is very hot in the summer so we spend a lot of time on the beach. My local beach is sandy with crystal clear water and you can do lots of water sports. Last summer I did paragliding. It was incredible. (details developing topic - make sure you've got some concrete details, i.e.: not too general)

We also have lots of traditional festivals in the summer in Greece. (topic sentence) One of my favourite festivals is at a park called "Agios Soulas". There's lots of music and traditional dancing too until very late. We have great fun.  (developing sentences)

That's all for now. How about you come and visit me this summer? Then you could experience the Greek summer holidays for yourself. (closing - again, say something personal)

Write back soon, (sign off)
Amalia (name)

Informal email features:
  • Relaxed language: contractions, simple words and sentences, exclamation marks (no more than two, however!)
Some useful language:

  • Introducing / adding points: By the way...   About...   Well,... Oh another thing...   Also ... ...too
  • Giving opinion: In my opinion...    For me...    I think / believe...     I'd rather...
  • Ending: That's all for now; Write back soon; Take care
  • Other linking words: and, but, so, too, also, as well as, because, first of all, finally, another...,
Happy email writing!
Miss Melissa
